JumpStart

JumpStart is an alternative education program that offers high school seniors the opportunity to complete their graduation requirements by pursuing their academic coursework independently through the Glencoe Study Center.  The JumpStart program is a dynamic and innovative learning experience that blends academics with rigorous and relevant experiential learning tailored to meet the needs of the individual student.
A student must be referred by a high school official for participation in the JumpStart program. The student and his or her parents/guardians meet with the Glencoe Study Center staff to design a personalized education plan that will combine schoolwork and motivational enhancements.
A JumpStart program includes the following required components:

  • Student attends three one-hour classes weekly at the Glencoe Study Center or other designated locations.
  • Student works at a job site or performs service at an approved site at least 15 hours a week.
  • Student participates in an independent inquiry project, which culminates in a final presentation of learning in the spring.
  • Student designs and completes an individualized wellness program.

Additional (optional) program enhancements might include the following:

  • Creative writing
  • Senior Seminars
  • Local community college courses
  • On-line and/or correspondence coursework
  • Career exploration
  • Service learning
  • Internships
  • Educational and cultural excursions
  • Museum work
  • Portfolio
  • Self-exploration through reflection, inventories, and surveys

The JumpStart is the ideal program for those students who need to recover credits due to illness or excessive absences, those who are in danger of dropping out or have already dropped out, and those who simply need extra support to make it to graduation.
